SUMMARY:Community Association of Oak Bay: Establishing Respectful Community Relationships
DESCRIPTION:How do we establish respectful community relationships?\nThat question will be the featured topic of the Community Association of Oak Bay’s 2023 AGM on Feb. 15.\nKeynote speaker Ry Moran, Associate University Librarian, Reconciliation at the University of Victoria and founding director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation in Winnipeg will explore what it means to apply the principles of truth and reconciliation in our local communities, and what we can all do as individuals to work together as good neighbours on unceded territory.\nPreviously, Moran served as Director of Statement Gathering for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and later as the Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. His role at UVic involves leading efforts to decolonize the university’s archives and collections, while integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and being into the university’s culture and deepening their commitment to respect and reconciliation.\nWhile at the TRC, Moran helped collect nearly 7,000 video and audio statements of former residential school Survivors and others affected by the residential school system, alongside millions of records that document the residential school system from more than 20 government departments and nearly 100 church archives.\nHe is the host of Taapwaywin: Talking about what we know and what we believe, a podcast about memory, power, and the journey to find truth. This podcast is built around conversations with Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and others.\n\n

SUMMARY:Community Learning Program Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the VNFC to celebrate the launch of the Community Learning Program, designed to support reconciliation through Indigenous-led, community-based learning. Food and prizes will be provided at the event.\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite ( https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/community-learning-program-launch-party-tickets-467764244447?aff=ebdssbdestsearch&keep_tld=1 ), or email Jenna at events@vnfc.ca.\n\nAbout the Community Learning Program:\nThis program was developed as a direct result of the work of the Victoria Urban Reconciliation Dialogue (VURD), where community came together to understand the reconciliation needs of our residents, and supports the VURD Blueprint focus area of Education, while also contributing to the other three areas: Relationships, Physical Spaces, and Decolonization. Building on this critical work, the Community Learning Program is creating a new pathway in community reconciliation.\n“We are excited to celebrate this new journey towards reconciliation in our community” said Ron Rice, VNFC Executive Director. “The Community Learning Program is an achievement not only for the successful learners, but also for everyone that came together through the VURD process, to be able to see their hard work put into action, and to wonder what’s next.”\nThe VNFC invites you to join us in celebration as we officially launch the Community Learning Program, share the impacts so far, and look to the future.\n
